Family therapy or support network involvement
‘Family’ can mean all
significant others, including partners and close friends as well as
immediate relatives. In addiction these relationships can become
distorted and damaged. Sometimes relationship problems may have
preceded the addiction. It is important to acknowledge and address
these aspects because good relationships are a source of great
support and a reason to remain sober and abstinent, whilst ongoing
stressful relationships can lead to a risk of relapse.
Group therapy
Group therapy is an
essential component although the size, aims and objectives of each
session will vary. Clients will be expected to participate in daily
group activity as well as smaller task orientated therapy groups.
Clients will also be expected to support each other by sharing
their experiences and participating in a ‘buddy’ scheme whilst they
are at Winthrop Hall.
Support after treatment
The programme doesn’t end
when residential rehabilitation is completed. A Recovery Care
programme supports each client for 12 months after treatment in his
or her normal environment to maximise the chances of maintaining
sobriety or remaining abstinent. Recovery Care is an
agreed aftercare programme of one-to-one sessions with a
therapist, telephone calls and other support and may include short
‘refresher’ stays at Winthrop Hall if required.
